I recently had the incredible privilege of spending time in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa—a journey made possible by the heartfelt invitation of my dear friend, Ngadi. I was overjoyed to accept and could never have anticipated just how profound and meaningful the experience would be.
One of the most deeply moving moments of my visit was traveling to Bunce Island. Standing on that historic ground, I was painfully aware that it had once been the final piece of African soil for millions of people who were imprisoned and trafficked to the Americas. The weight of that history, imagining my ancestors possibly standing there in chains centuries ago, was heartbreaking and eye opening. It’s an experience I will carry with me.
Beyond the work I was honored to do, the true gift of this journey was the people I met. I had the joy of connecting with new friends, engaging in meaningful conversations, and learning so much.
I left Sierra Leone with a heart overflowing with pride, gratitude and a love for a country that continues to hold a special and enduring place in my heart. This experience has deepened my appreciation and connection to a history and a place that mean more than words can truly capture.
