Finding texture
As a photographer, I am always looking around at textures. Then I go about the process of translating that texture through my lens. Can I capture the smoothness, roughness, delicate nature of the image in front of me? Will the final image invite the viewer to reach out and touch the picture?
Texture is an essential aspect of our lives that often goes unnoticed. Whether it's the roughness of a tree bark, the smoothness of a polished stone, or the softness of a fluffy pillow, textures are all around us, and they can add depth, richness, and meaning to our lives. This month we will explore the concept of finding texture in our lives and how it can enhance our experiences.
Texture in nature
Nature is a rich source of texture, from the roughness of an alligator’s skin (you don’t have to find out first hand – trust me on this one) to the smoothness of a rock. I was in Sierra Leone recently and picked up a smooth beach rock that was rich in iron ore. By immersing ourselves in nature, we can experience a variety of textures that can awaken our senses and connect us to the natural world. We can also find texture in the plants, animals, and landscapes that surround us, adding depth and richness to our experiences.
Texture in art
Art is another source of texture that can enhance our lives. Whether it's the rough brushstrokes of a painting or the intricate details of a sculpture, art can offer a tactile experience that engages our senses and emotions. We can also find texture in the colors, shapes, and patterns of art, adding depth and meaning to our interpretations.
Texture in food
Food is a sensory experience that can offer a variety of textures, from the crunchiness of a carrot to the creaminess of a pudding. By exploring and being aware of different textures in our food, we can awaken our taste buds and savor the flavors and sensations of our meals. We can also find texture in the presentation and preparation of our food, adding a visual and tactile dimension to our dining experiences.
Texture in everyday life
Even in our everyday lives, we can find texture in the small moments and details that often go unnoticed. Whether it's the texture of a favorite sweater or the feel of a warm cup of tea, these small sensory experiences can add richness and depth to our daily routines. By paying attention to the textures of our lives, we can enhance our experiences and find meaning and the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Finding texture in our lives can enhance our experiences and add depth, richness, and meaning to our daily routines. Whether it's through nature, art, food, relationships, or everyday life, texture offers a sensory experience that engages our senses and emotions. By exploring the textures of our lives, we can awaken our senses and find beauty and meaning in the world around us.
Select a day in January, where you will take the time to hone in on the textures around you. Take a picture of the texture that intrigued you the most and share it with me on Facebook or tag me on Instagram.
