The Eye of The Storm

The weekend of August 17th and 18th was one Bermuda won't soon forget.

Hurricane Ernesto made its presence known, battering our island with relentless winds for a staggering 36 hours. It was, without a doubt, the longest hurricane I’ve ever experienced.

What made it unique was how slowly the eye of the hurricane moved over Bermuda—it took about four hours to pass, during which there was an eerie stillness.

Despite all the warnings, I found myself thinking the meteorologists must have gotten it wrong. With no winds for hours, I walked outside to look at my neighborhood because I was convinced the worst was behind us.

But, as those who experienced it know, the calm was eventually ended. The winds returned with a vengeance, reminding us that the storm was far from over.

Weathering a storm like Ernesto brings to mind many metaphors about life’s storms and the lessons they offer. And yes, I have a lesson to share with you.

In the heart of the storm, whether it’s the literal winds outside or the figurative storms we all face, it’s crucial to find that calm and patience within yourself. It’s a calm that centers you, that keeps you steady even as the world around you is anything but. This calm is always within you—seek it out, hold on to it, and when you can, share it with others.

We can't always control the storms that come our way, but we can control how we respond to them. Let's remember to find and nurture our inner calm, so we’re prepared for whatever comes next.

Take care, stay safe, and hold on to your peace.
